Elaine Phillips (nee Ward)

Elaine Phillips

On Tuesday, November 29th 2005, Sharon Elaine Phillips (Ward), aged 60, died peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital after more than a four-year struggle with ovarian cancer. Loving and devoted wife of Larry (Lawrence) Melvin, and mother to Cathi Waddell and Jana Bowden (Pierce). Cherished grandmother of Kyle, Ryan and Marissa who held a special place in her heart. Devoted daughter of Mary Ward (Forestell) and the late Kitchener Ward. Dear sister of Lois and Rev. Robert Probert and four brothers, Earl (Mary Francis), Carl (Sylvia), Alan (Trisha) and Thomas (Linda). Sister-in-law of Thomas and Diane Woodward, Al and Wendy Tricket, Don and Linda Swerdfeger, Mike and Janet Phillips. Beloved aunt to 18 nieces and nephews, and dear friend to Flo Dumas and Sonia Hutchins.

Elaine will be sorely missed by her friends of the Catholic Women's League and sisters in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She worked 23 years for the Department of National Defence and was held in high esteem by all who had the pleasure of sharing her dedication and expertise. Moreover, she was especially supportive of those whom she felt were unappreciated or disadvantaged. In dedicating herself to find purpose in her illness, she spearheaded efforts which raised $14,000 for research and spoke to hundreds of women and medical professionals to raise awareness of the unfamiliar signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.

Special thanks to Dr. Fung Kee Fung, the gynaeoncologic-oncology staff and the 8th floor nursing team at the Ottawa Hospital for their care and compassion. Friends may pay their respects at Kelly Funeral Home, 3000 Woodroffe Avenue, (south of Fallowfield) on Thursday, December 1st from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral to be held Friday, December 2nd at St. Patrick's Church, 15 Steeple Hill Crescent, Fallowfield for Mass of Christian Funeral at 10:30 AM. In memorium donations made to the Ottawa Palliative Care Outreach Program would be appreciated.
