Laureate Lamba Chapter PL 253
Beta Sigma Phi
Ottawa, Canada

2009 – 2010

Laureate Lambda is a chapter 13 very active sisters who hold degrees ranging from Exemplar to Master and who are on the lookout for new members who might be comfortable joining us in our richly rewarding activities.

We meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the months from September through May – often with a social or two in June. The first Tuesday of the month is a “Girls’ Night” for socializing, chit-chatting and generally enjoying each others company. The second meeting of the month is our business night, where we hold a formal business meeting followed by a cultural program.

Our membership is not restricted to any one area of the city, as we are not zoned, and we welcome guests and members throughout the Greater Ottawa area.

A BBQ and Rumoli night mixed social in the spring brought the 2008 – 2009 sorority year to an end and after the summer hiatus, we were all ready to resume our activities in September.

October found us enjoying Octoberfest with our husbands at the Maple Leaf -Almrausch Club with good food, wonderful music and excellent friends. A girls’ games night led to lots of chatter and lots of laughter.

November has been a busy month with a movie night – Mrs. Miniver – a golden oldie, and an evening of Glow-in-the-Dark mini putt at the Putting Edge. Our chapter also teamed up with Beta Rho Master chapter for a Sunday afternoon of court whist and good food. A planned weekend in Watertown has been postponed to the spring.

We will be celebrating the holiday season with a pot luck dinner and Christmas gift exchange in December followed by a New Year’s Eve party to ring out 2009 and welcome 2010.

Plans for 2010 include a Valentine dinner, a bowling and pizza night, a murder mystery evening and, to end the year, a BBQ and scavenger hunt. The highlight of the year for the gals will be our “mini-convention” in early June.

While we love to socialize, we are also active in service projects within the community.

Helping feed the hungry at the Shepherds of Good Hope was a highlight of the fall. We feel we have so much, it’s a pleasure to return something to the community. As such, we provide ongoing support to The Well, a drop in centre for women and their children in downtown Ottawa. We donate clothing and toiletries, etc. throughout the year as well as assisting for special events including wrapping gifts for them for Christmas.

To help finance our service projects, we have a variety of fund raisers, all of which provide us with great fellowship and a lot of laughter.

For us, Beta Sigma Phi is a second family, and our membership is a rich and rewarding experience in which we invite others to participate.
